        INTRODUCTION
There follows a collection from miscellaneous sources in Ireland and
England. I believe these will be of interest to the British and North American reader and ,perhaps,of some general interest to the Irish reader. They give a good general indication to the spread of the name in different parts of the United Kingdom. However,my primary aim was to trace the origins of Robert and Thomas Soden of Sligo in England and ,thence, the preponderance of information on the period pre-1700.

Reaney Extract:-

'Soden' according to Reaney 9294 - r -1

soden/Soldan(v. Sowden
Soltan - v. Sowden
page 32:
Sowden, Soden, Soltan, Soldan, Sultan.

Sowtan, Soldangus, Ric I Cur (K)
Henry Soldan, 12th Feu Du
roger le Soudan,1208 Cur (Y)
Robert le Sowden, 1279 RH (BK)

OFr Soudan 'Sultan' occasionally perhaps a nickname , but often a pageant-name from the Soldan of the Saracens.
cl"....he that playeth the sowsayeer is percase a sowter. Yet if one showed ...calle him by his own name.... one of his tormentors might hap to breake his (one's) head." (Sir Thomas More)

DOMESDAY BOOK: WARWICKSHIRE 1066 A.D.

There follows a number of extracts from the Domesday Book for
Warwickshire for towns with which the 'Soden' name is associated.
I thought these might give some idea of the origin of the towns of
the area at this very early stage in English society.Few families are lucky enough  to be able to trace their ancestry before the Domesday Book. The nearest name or variation to 'Soden' is 'SOTI' in the town of SHUSTOKE,which
is included below in the original and translation.I do not believe, however that there is any link with the name 'Soden.'All the other excerpts are in translation. There is also one extract on the village of Bourton-on-Dunsmore,birthplace of Thomas and Robert Soden.
The towns are as follows:-
Bourton 16.30
Shustoke 31.7
