Sodens from 1833 Ireland
Robert Dawson Soden was the middle child of 5 children, 2 elder brothers and 2 younger sisters.
 He was born on 27/10/1837in Bailieborough, Co Cavan Ireland. The other children were Edward b. 1833 , 
Charles James b.1835, Mary b. 1838 and Jane b. 1840 both girls died in 1844.

 Robert and his brothers decide to leave Ireland, Edward migrated to America he had two sons 
Charles and Edward Soden. Charles James went to England , he had twelve
children. In the 1901 England and Wales census Charles Soden States b. Ireland  Co Cavan 1835 
(Administrated County) Glamorganshire,(Civil Parish) Cowbridge,(Occupation )Retired Civil Servant.
 One of Charles sons was Lieutenant Colonel George Wensley Clothworth Soden married to 
Ethel Margaret Booker. They have a son (still living age 90 in 2006) his name is Terry married to Jean 
they have a daughter Margaret married to an Asian Michael Kwee they have two daughter Victoria and 
Elizabeth. Terry lives at Barrymore Cottage, Ink pan Road Hungerford Berkshire R.G. 179UA UK.

They married in Balbriggan Dublin Ireland 1862 . They had Kate before they left on the 7.4.1863 . 
On the 2/7/ 1863 they migrated to Australia on the ship  Cairngorm. They came to 
a farm and grew cotton with Kanaka labour in  Pine Mountain near Ipswich Queensland they had 
their family there Soden family around 1890

Richard b. 11.6.1882 Died 8.11.1898 buried at the Caboonba Homestead .
Richard died aged 17 after falling off and being dragged by a horse near where the Mt Beppo School 
is as the Caboonba church was not yet built Mr Henry Somerset offered to have the funeral and 
burial at the Caboonba Homestead to help the Soden Family with their grief. Years later when the 
Wivenhoe Dam was built and the water was rising the headstone was moved to the Caboonba Church Cemetery.

(Sarah)Jane b. 24.2.1885 married in 1905 Alexander McArra McLeod buried Balmoral Cemetery. 
They had Hector Alexander b. 1907, David Douglas b. 1909, Jean b. 1913.

Soden History in Mt Beppo

Robert Dawson and Mary moved their family to Mt Beppo where they applied for a government selection in 1885. 
(Three years before Henry Plantagenet Somerset came to the area and secured 20,000 acres at Mt Stanley ,
The Caboonba Homestead). The Sodens Selection registered in Ipswich Portion 154 Parish of Cressbrook, 
County of Cavandish,7008 selection of 160 acres. The land was rich scrub land and had to be cleared
and built on in just a couple of years. They grew corn and Lucerne . Had cows for milk, butter, cream 
and meat, chickens for eggs and meat and grew vegetables.
In 1894 Robert Dawson took on the mail contracts around Cressbrook, Mt Stanley, and Mt Beppo district 
and also established a Receiving Office on the corner of his property on Mt Beppo Road . He also donated 
some land for a community hall. Which held Dances and other social events.

Most religious services in those days were held in in the homes of the Sodens as well as the Somersets 
x`xwhen a travelling minister came around possible once a month .To cater for the growing Protestant community 
The Sodens and the Somersets organized and built the Caboonba Church an undenominational Church 
for all to use.. It was finished being built in Nov 1905, Robert Dawson died on the 3rd January 1905 so was buried 
in the cemetery before the church was built but sadly he was not the first Soden buried there. Richard aged 2yrs 
son of Edward William and Minnie (Nofz) died in 16.8.1904.
The first rail could be removed so that Mrs Mary Soden Snr could be wheeled off a buckboard in a wheel chair 
and enter the church.
There has been a Soden family member on the board of Trustees since 1905 and still has a four generation 
Soden is Treasurer at the moment.

Robert Dawson Soden and his wife Mary Francis Mortimer , married in Ireland in 1862 and migrated to Queensland arriving 2nd July 1863. They arrived on the Cairngorm ship and are listed as assisted immigrants.His father is recorded as Charles Henry Soden and his mother as Letitia Kellett. I strongly suspect he is a descendant of the Soden family of Cavan CountyTheir first child Kate was born in Ireland on the 7/4/1863. Robert and Mary had 10 children in total and they were both successful farmers in the Mt Beppo District. According to Robert Dawson Soden death Certificate he was born on the 27/10/1837 died on the 3/1/1905. His father is recorded as Charles Henry Soden and his mother as Letitia Kellett. I strongly suspect he is a descendent of the Soden  family of Cavan County.Born Ireland 27/10/1837 Fort William Virginia (inscribed on head stone) died 3/1/1905. Robert and Mary were a pioneering farming family in the Mt Beppo district near Brisbane Queensland.[Source: Roslyn McCarthy, great great granddaughter who still farms in the area. January, 2016]Thomas Soden and Margaret Soden,nee Purdue arrived with 3 of their children in Australia aboard the Adam Lodge in February,1840. Thomas was the first Governor of the Bathurst gaol,a post he held for 23 years without any leave. He commenced work on June 4,1840. During his 2 years at the gaol he bought a half share in a property at Dennis Island,George?s Plains which he called Athlone.

Thomas was among the petitioners requesting a village at Peppers Creek. 

Before the church was built at Dennis Island,services were held at Athlone. 

A death for a Thomas Soden died 1852 aged 72 at Hill End Bathurst,making his year of birth approximately 1780. He is buried in the Wesleyan Methodist Section,Dennis Island,New South Wales,Australia.

Margaret Purdue is in all probability the Purdue mentioned in the Grove Abstracts,National

William arrived in Australia with his parents aboard "Adam Lodge" in Feb. 1840. and acquired land at Dunns Plains. The Sodens remained in the Rockley area until the end of the 19th century when they moved to Bathurst where William was licencee of the White Horse Inn and later was in partnership with another inn-keeper. In their reclining years they went to Sydney to be near their youngest daughter.

There are 2 places to his marriage,the other is the Rockley School Hall. In 1850 he was a farmer at O Connell Plains. Marriage is listed under Loden.

He died on 12 Decmeber,1908 in Petersham,NSW and is buried in Ind. section,Rookwood,NSW and is recorded as married in St.Stephens Pres.Dunns Plains,NSW

His father was Thomas Soden and his mother Margaret.

Susannah Kable was living at Bathurst at the time of her marriage. From Sydney Morning Herald 24.9.1926.

Soden ,Mrs. Susannah,died Sep. 1926,one of the oldest pioneers of Western NSW aged 95 year,Mrs.Soden was a daughter of Mr.George Kable one of the little but intrepid band of agricultural settlers who blazed a path across the blue Mountains in search of pastoral country and she was the granddaughter of Hanry Kable who arrived with Governor Phillips staff in 1788. Born in Kelso in 1831,she was educated at the Castlereagh St. Ladies? School ,one of the first established in the state.

She is buried in Ind.Section,Rockwood,NSW her father was George Esto Kable and her mother Sasannah Jones.

The original Family tree of of Australian, Nea McCulloch sent to me in October 2012. As a result of the information I put up on the Australian page, Nea was able to confirm her families arrival and origin in Australia.

Her great great grandmother was Teresa Soden , daughter of Joseph Soden, born in Stepney, arrived in Melbourne on the 'Gloriana'

She married David Heddle from Orkney Islands born in Edinburgh, Scotland.

 Her Great grandmother was Elizabeth Mary Heddle , she married Robert John Lawrence McWilliams who came to Sydney from  Caledon, in Tyrone.

 The McCullochs came from Troon, Ayrshire though Thomas McCullooch was born in County Down  in Northern Ireland and arrived in Sydney in 1821 as a prisoner for being a member of the 1820 Scottish Radicals transported for high treason.
